Kaanaapali

November 19, 2016 by

Kaanapali was a special Saint Bernard in every sense of the word. I adopted him as a puppy from the Saint Bernard Rescue Society. He was born on December 19, 2005 along with five siblings. His Dad was a Great Pyrenees and his Mom was a Saint. Kaanapali was so well behaved and a darling boy. He was very even tempered and loved all dogs no matter how mean they were to him. He would travel with me and learned to stay in motels and go out to all the wilderness areas with me. He loved sleeping outside and playing in the snow. About 1 1/2 years ago he had trouble climbing stairs. Yet, with my help he climbed into the truck to go on trips. The neurosurgeon diagnosed his ailment as wobblers disease. I tried gold bead therapy but it did not help I treated him with prednisone to ease his pain and it helped for a few months. However, the prednisone increased his appetite and he gained a lot of weight. This made it made it harder for him to get up or lie down. Last Thanksgiving, it became very difficult for him to walk. I took him to CSU to see if surgery would help him but the neurosurgeon said that his chances were not good. Per the doctor’s advice I put him on a diet to weight and weaned him off the prednisone. I was hoping against hope that he could walk without pain. Unfortunately his condition progressively worsened and on the night of Feb 6 he had a tough time changing positions even when he was lying down. He had difficulty sitting up, eating and drinking. Knowing that he was in pain I reluctantly made the decision to euthanize him. His soul left this planet on Feb 7 at 12:05 PM. I know he’s no longer suffering and is at peace. He left us all with lovely memories and lots of love. Thank you, Kaanapali. We love you.
